Startpage celebrates 15 year anniversary by showing an unwavering commitment to privacy.

Earlier this year, we kicked off Startpage’s 15 year anniversary by sharing a timeline of milestones. From Startpage’s launch in 2006 as the first ever private search engine to hosting a worldwide interview with Edward Snowden in 2016 and our first ever marketing campaign in 2021, we have come a long way!

Here’s a recap of Startpage accomplishments and advancements over the last 15 years:

Edward Snowden’s release of NSA material is the most significant leak in US history since 1978, revealing the NSA was unconstitutionally seizing the private records of billions of individuals who had not been suspected of any wrongdoing. In a special November 10 conversation streamed from Moscow, Edward Snowden offered the following tip about protecting your privacy online: “Be careful about what you share with large service providers… There are alternatives like Startpage…that don’t store that information.”

Max Schrems is an Austrian privacy activist and lawyer. He’s also a co-founder of noyb – European Center for Digital Rights, a non-profit committed to launching court cases in support of EU privacy law and GDPR. Startpage has been a proud supporter of noyb. Max Schrems shared, “Startpage has supported noyb’s work from the very beginning and thus allows us to effectively enforce European data protection law and to strengthen our backing for data protection-friendly alternatives.”

Phil Zimmermann, computer scientist and cryptographer, is best known as the creator of Pretty Good Privacy (PGP). In 2018, Phil Zimmermann joined Startpage to spearhead its product innovation and crypto-development. Phil Zimmermann said, “I decided to join Startpage.com because they are ideologically aligned on privacy issues. They really care. And they make products everyone can use.”

epicenter.works is committed to strengthening fundamental rights and freedom in the digital age. Founder and managing director shared, “In our seminars on digital self-defense, we have been recommending Startpage as a privacy-friendly alternative to Google from Europe for many years.”

Dan Arel, privacy activist and founder of ThinkPrivacy.ch, is a frequent guest writer on the Privacy Please! blog. Dan Arel has said, “We work so closely with Startpage and contribute to their blog because it was clear after meeting them they care about user privacy to their core, not just as a marketing tactic, but the very fabric of their being is to provide users with a quality experience that focuses on privacy first.”
