How Startpage Works: Private Search Without Tracking

Startpage private search illustration with magnifying glass and search bar

Looking for a search engine that doesn’t track you? Startpage is a private search engine designed to help people search the web without turning their searches into personal profiles.

We do not record IP addresses. We do not record search queries. We do not serve tracking or identifying cookies. We do not build personal profiles. We do not save or sell your search history.

Startpage search queries are stripped of unnecessary metadata, including IP address and other identifying information, before anonymized queries are sent to search and content providers.

Read the Startpage Privacy Policy.

Short answer: Startpage lets you search without recorded IP addresses, saved search queries, tracking cookies, or personal profiles. Queries are anonymized before being sent to search and content providers. Startpage also offers Anonymous View — our proprietary proxy feature for privately opening search results without revealing your IP address to the destination website.

Quick privacy summary

Specification Startpage What it means
Search queries recorded No Startpage does not log what you search.
IP addresses recorded No Startpage does not record IP addresses as part of private search.
Tracking or identifying cookies No Startpage does not use cookies to identify you or connect searches over time.
Personal profiles built No Startpage does not build personal profiles based on your searches.
Ads model Contextual ads Startpage shows ads based on the current search query, not behavioral tracking.
Result source Google results through Startpage’s privacy layer Startpage provides search results without sending your identity along with the query.
Jurisdiction Netherlands / EU Startpage operates under European privacy law.
Private browsing feature Anonymous View Anonymous View lets you open results through Startpage’s proxy so websites see Startpage’s request instead of your direct request.

The idea is simple: you get private search results. Search providers do not get your identity. Advertisers do not get a behavioral profile. Startpage does not keep a record of what you searched.

How Startpage works in five steps

Startpage protects search privacy by separating the person from the query.

Step What happens Why it matters
1 You enter a search query on Startpage. Startpage receives the query so it can return results.
2 Startpage removes unnecessary metadata. Identifying information, including IP address, is stripped before the query is sent to search and content providers.
3 Startpage sends an anonymized query to search and content providers. The provider receives the query without receiving the user identity attached to it.
4 Startpage returns the results to you. You get search results without Startpage logging your searches.
5 Any ads shown are contextual. Ads are based on the current search term, not a personal profile or search history.

This is what makes Startpage different from search engines that rely on recorded search history, behavioral profiling, or personalized ad targeting.

Does Startpage track users?

No. Startpage does not track users.

We do not record IP addresses, record search queries, serve tracking or identifying cookies, build personal profiles, or save or sell your search history.

To protect the service from abuse, Startpage may register and block IP addresses connected to automated, high-volume robotic requests. That is abuse prevention, not user profiling.

Read the Startpage Privacy Policy.

Does Startpage save search history?

No. Startpage does not log your searches.

When you search, your query is stripped of unnecessary metadata before being sent to search and content providers. Startpage does not keep a record of your searches and does not use search history to build a profile about you.

That means Startpage is designed not to know who you are, what you searched before, or what advertisers might want to infer about you.

Does Startpage use Google results?

Yes. Startpage provides access to Google search results, along with results from additional search providers including Bing, through Startpage’s privacy layer.

The privacy question is not only where results come from. It is what data is sent, who receives it, and whether it can be tied back to a person.

When you search with Startpage, your identifying information is removed before the anonymized query is sent to search and content providers. The provider receives the search query without receiving the user identity attached to it.

That is not “Google minus most of the tracking.”

That is a different data model.

A search provider can return results without receiving your IP address, search history, or personal profile from Startpage.

What data do search providers receive?

Search providers receive the anonymized query needed to return results. They do not receive your identity from Startpage with that query.

Question Answer Why it matters
Does the provider receive the search query? Yes A search query is needed to return search results.
Does the provider receive your IP address from Startpage? No Startpage strips identifying information before sending the query.
Does Startpage send your search history? No Startpage does not log your searches.
Does Startpage send a personal profile? No Startpage does not build personal profiles.
Does Startpage use past searches to target ads? No Startpage uses contextual ads, not behavioral ads.

This is why privacy should be evaluated by data flow: what is collected, where it goes, who receives it, and whether it can be tied back to a person.

Why Startpage is not just a “middleman”

Startpage is sometimes called a “middleman.” The word doesn’t quite fit.

A middleman moves things between two parties. Startpage does three things a middleman does not:

1. Strips identifying information before queries leave Startpage: The search provider receives the query without receiving the user identity attached to it. That is not forwarding. That is transformation.

2. Extends privacy beyond the search itself through Anonymous View: When you click a search result through Anonymous View, Startpage acts as a proxy between you and the destination website. The website sees Startpage’s proxy request instead of your direct request. That is not middleman behavior. That is active shielding.

3. Operates under EU privacy law: Startpage is based in the Netherlands and operates under GDPR. That means our privacy commitments are subject to EU data protection law and Dutch regulatory oversight, not just policy promises.

How does Startpage make money?

Startpage is free to use because we show contextual ads.

Contextual ads are based on the current search term, not a personal profile, search history, or online activity. That means ads can be relevant to the search without being based on who you are.

Ad type How it works Privacy impact
Contextual ads Based on the current search query. Contextual ads do not require a personal profile.
Behavioral ads Based on user behavior, history, inferred interests, or profiles. Behavioral ads depend on collecting or inferring information about people.

Search can be useful and sustainable without turning people into dossiers.

Does Startpage use tracking cookies?

No. Startpage does not serve tracking or identifying cookies.

That means Startpage does not use cookies to identify you, follow you across the web, or connect today’s search to yesterday’s search.

Full transparency: Startpage offers an optional preferences cookie that retains your search settings if you choose to save them. It is anonymous and expires after 90 days of inactivity. You can also save your settings without using this cookie.

It is not a tracking cookie and is not used to identify you.

Does Startpage personalize search results?

Startpage does not build personal profiles or store search history to personalize results around who we think you are.

That means Startpage does not create a search bubble based on your past searches, inferred interests, location history, or behavioral profile.

You search. Startpage returns results. The search does not become a profile.

What is Anonymous View?

Anonymous View is Startpage’s proprietary proxy feature for opening search results more privately.

When you use Anonymous View, Startpage connects to third-party websites on your behalf. That means those websites see Startpage’s proxy request instead of your direct request.

Private search protects your search. Anonymous View helps protect you after you click.

Startpage vs Incognito mode vs VPNs

Incognito mode does not make your searches private. It mainly keeps activity out of your local browser history.

A VPN can help hide your IP address from some websites or networks, but it does not stop a search engine from logging your searches if you use a tracking search engine.

Startpage protects the search itself.

Tool What it helps with What it does not automatically solve
Incognito mode Keeps browsing activity out of local browser history. Incognito mode does not make searches private from search engines or websites.
VPN Can hide your IP address from some websites and networks. A VPN does not stop a tracking search engine from logging searches or building profiles.
Startpage private search Lets you search without recorded search queries, tracking cookies, or personal profiles. Private search does not automatically make every third-party website private after you leave Startpage.
Anonymous View Lets you open search results through Startpage’s proxy. Some sites may load more slowly or not work normally through the proxy.

Anonymous View is available with Startpage search results by clicking the mask icon next to a result.

Why does search privacy matter?

Search is one of the most revealing things people do online.

A search query can reveal what someone is worried about, researching, planning, comparing, buying, questioning, or trying to understand. Over time, search history can become a detailed map of a person’s life.

Startpage’s approach is simple: no data, no map.

If a search engine does not log your searches or build a personal profile, there is less personal search history to leak, sell, misuse, subpoena, or expose.

Does Startpage offer private AI?

Yes. Startpage also offers Vanish, a standalone private AI app built around the same privacy principle as Startpage search.

Vanish does not store chat prompts or responses on Startpage servers after your session. Prompts and responses are stored on your device only if you choose to enable recent chat storage. Vanish also proxies prompts through Startpage’s privacy infrastructure so they cannot be linked back to your identity by the AI provider.

Read the Vanish Privacy Policy.

Vanish prompts and responses are not used to improve AI models. Vanish also does not record or store your IP address for analytics or tracking, does not log your activity for advertising profiling, and does not sell your personal data.

Private AI question Vanish What it means
Are chat prompts stored on Startpage servers? No Vanish does not store chat prompts or responses on Startpage servers after your session.
Can chats stay on your device? Yes Prompts and responses are stored on your device only if you choose to enable recent chat storage.
Can AI providers link prompts back to your identity? No Prompts are proxied through Startpage’s privacy infrastructure so they cannot be linked back to your identity by the AI provider.
Are prompts or responses used to train AI models? No Vanish prompts and responses are not used to improve AI models.
Does Vanish record IP addresses for analytics or tracking? No Vanish does not record or store your IP address for analytics or tracking.
Does Vanish sell personal data? No Vanish does not sell your personal data.

The standard is the same: privacy claims should be judged by data flow. What is collected? What is stored? What leaves the device? Who receives it? Can it be linked back to a person?

What Startpage does not do

  • record IP addresses
  • record search queries
  • build personal profiles
  • serve tracking or identifying cookies
  • save or sell search history
  • use past searches to target ads
  • connect ads to an individual user
  • send your identifying information to search providers with your query

The goal is simple: search the web without being searched back.
