Startpage.com Wins 2019 Dutch Privacy Award

Startpage.com has won the 2019 Dutch Privacy Award for Best Consumer Product. The award, presented annually at the Privacy First/ECP National Privacy Conference, recognizes privacy-friendly entrepreneurship and innovation.

Startpage.com was distinguished by the awards panel for offering consumers no-logging private search and its new “Anonymous View” feature that allows consumers to surf the web privately, too.

“Visiting websites found through a private search engine is, in fact, not private at all,” said Startpage.com Business Development Director Alex van Eesteren, who accepted the award for the company. “As soon as you click on a search result and make a connection with the website, that site can see who you are, place cookies on your computer, and start tracking your behavior. Anonymous View fixes this.”

“We are honored the National Privacy Conference has recognized our commitment to creating tools that protect privacy,” said van Eesteren, who accepted the award on behalf of Startpage.com. Photo by Tamara Heck.

When a user clicks on an Anonymous View link, Startpage.com goes to the website, retrieves the page, and displays it to the user. The website sees Startpage.com as the visitor, while the Startpage.com user remains invisible. This allows users to visit websites – and additional links within those sites — while protecting their privacy.

A free Anonymous View link is delivered to the right of every search result at Startpage.com.

“We are honored the National Privacy Conference has recognized our commitment to creating tools that protect privacy,” said van Eesteren. “With Startpage.com, consumers can search in privacy and also visit websites anonymously. We call this Search 2.0, with a top focus on privacy by design.”
