Happy New Year from Startpage!

Dear Startpage Community,

With the New Year fast approaching, it’s time for some retrospection.

The clock is ticking on privacy.

Last year, the Cambridge Analytica revelations further highlighted the extent to which internet companies surveil our online activity, and privacy concerns kept snowballing in 2019.

China is rapidly building a surveillance state with a dystopian society that should scare everyone. Western governments are trying to undermine the only method that currently exists to reliably protect the world’s information: encryption.

But it wasn’t all bad for privacy in 2019.

Privacy legislation that was implemented in the EU (GDPR) and planned in California (CCPA) is starting to have an impact. Consumer privacy has taken center stage. With awareness building, people are increasingly making changes to their daily online routines to protect themselves. Changing your search engine to Startpage is a great start.

2019 was a solid year for Startpage.

Our unique delivery of Google search results with best-in-class privacy resulted in the highest volume of search queries in our long history. This tells us our service is being valued and used by more and more people worldwide.

2019 has also been an inflection point for Startpage for two reasons.

First, we made significant inroads into enhancing our privacy product features. We launched a News Tab, delivering unprofiled news from around the world. We improved our private search browser extension to ease the installation process and we created informative privacy content to help educate people on how to protect their personal data online.

Second, as we continue building out our global team to start spreading the word more effectively in 2020, we’ve received some concerned feedback regarding our investment, which we’ve addressed through transparent communications and detailed illustrations of our strong and unchanged privacy practices. We are now better positioned to have an even bigger privacy impact in this world, where many people still have never heard of Startpage.

For 2020 we plan to further expand our product offering.

Our product teams will focus on making your search experience even more convenient.

Topics on our roadmap include delivering many new Instant Answers, improving our mobile experience, launching Startpage’s “Privacy Please!” newsletter, relaunching our calculator, adding more helpful features to our browser extension and further enhancing our unique Anonymous View. We strive to put our users back in control of their connected lives. You should not have to worry about trading privacy and control in order to enjoy the technology you love.

Let’s get the word about Startpage out to more people. You can help here. Give the gift of privacy with the people you know this holiday and tell them about Startpage! The Startpage team sincerely thanks our many long-term and new users for their trust.
Thank you for your continued support! I would also like to thank all my colleagues for your wonderful contributions towards the success of our privacy mission.

Moving into the New Year, our focus and strategy are clear. We are the world’s most private search engine, protecting users’ privacy, one search at a time. I feel energized to continue our mission in 2020.

Wishing you and your families a joyous, peaceful and restful holiday season and a very private 2020!

Sincerely,

Robert E.G. Beens
